Artist's Statement
|
|
My paintings are produced from observations in the field but are composed and painted more often in the studio than outdoors or (plein air). My studio and gallery are housed in a converted barn near our family's house in rural North central Ohio. My paintings are inspired by both my local surroundings and the areas I visit each year.
When painting in watercolor I use a three step process. I first lay down a very wet wash and work wet on wet in the coloring of sky and background. Second, I sketch the composition of my subject with a semi-opaque wash. The final work is done in dry brush.
When painting in oil, I paint a sky and body or underlayment first and in some cases allow this to dry before painting color, highlight, and detail. The type of bristle and shape of the brushes used, as well as the amount of pressure applied is key in my technique. As with watercolor subtle handling of the medium defines this style.
